Brother Knight, Edward Ernest Okonski, Sr., a gentle, kind, loving, all-around people person known as Ed, Edziu, Pops, Papa, Grandpa O, Fishing Buddy, Papa Smurf was an extraordinary man with a lot of friends. Edward left his family and friends to "go home” on April 9, 2022, leaving behind a legacy of charity and volunteering in the Christian community around Knights of Columbus activities. Ed was born on March 28, 1933, in Bremond, TX to Edward and Helen Okonski. He graduated from Bremond H.S. in 1951. After high school he moved to Houston and began his career in the financial industry. Ed worked at Gulfgate State Bank and then First City Bank from 1956-1991. As with many in the financial services industry, Ed found himself changing careers after a layoff and joined a real estate management company, Tramco, where he worked another 25 years, until he retired all together. Ed shared his love for and taught his sons the art of barbecuing. At many family gatherings, he would be around the pit, mastering BBQ chicken. He also loved catching crappie and wade fishing in the Gulf. As a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 2917, Ed served in various officer positions and was instrumental in organizing several fundraisers. For many years he was the Treasurer for the Home Association and kept accurate records and never missed a statement. He also enjoyed bowling in the KC league, and traveled with other bowlers to State and International Tournaments and was the State champion in doubles in 1999 with his son, Sam. He was awarded Knight of the Month and Family of the Month on several occasions and in 2021, Ed was awarded Knight of the Year. Ed is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Janie Okonski; sons: Sam Okonski and his wife, Deborah; Greg Okonski and his wife, Darlene; Brian Okonski; his daughter, Mary Frances Morrow and her husband, Dave; daughter-in-law, Pam Okonski; grandchildren: Vanessa (Dylan), Nichole, Melissa (Andrew), Eddie III, Katye, Amanda (Jonathan), Nicole (Kevin), Connor, Brenda, Josh (Kellie), Angela, and Adylynn and several great grandchildren. Ed is also survived by his siblings, Joe and his wife, Sue; Gene; Larry and his wife, Monica; Dolores and her husband, Jerry; Mary Ann and her husband, Stanley; and Helen and her husband, Jack. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Edward L. and Helen Okonski, and son, Edward E. Okonski, Jr.
Carmen Escamilla, devoted daughter, friend, wife, mother, grandmother, skilled bingo/casino enthusiast passed away April 2nd, 2022. Carmen Escamilla was born Sept. 8, 1941 in San Antonio, only daughter to mother Torivia H. Dennis. Having met as kids in the 3rd grade, Carmen was happily married to her devoted husband and childhood sweetheart Jesse T. Escamilla for over 62 years. Carmen was the embodiment of what it meant to be an unconditionally loving mother and raised her 5 children to be strong, fearless, caring, and independent just as she was. She was a dedicated grandmother of 13, great-grandmother of 20 and great-great grandmother of 1, who somehow made it possible to actively be present in their many events such as; grandparent days, baseball games, dance recitals, and graduation events to praise their successes and encourage their dreams. Carmen is preceded in death by her mother Torivia H. Dennis and son Jesse Escamilla Jr. She is survived by her husband Brother Knight, Jesse Escamilla,Sr., daughters and sons Bertha Gonzales, Rachel, Roger, and Michael Escamilla, and her granddaughter Yvette Marie Morin.
Brother Knight Daniel James Naskey passed away on March 15, 2022 at the age of 67. He was predeceased by his parents, Louis Pete Naskey and Vassie Marie Clifton Naskey; his brother Jerry Naskey; and his nephew Dean Marcum. He is survived by his wife Susan Denice Naskey; his siblings, Mark Naskey, Carolyn Hofker (Raymond) and Kimberly Naskey; his niece Amber Naskey. Evelyn Zaborowski Dutka, went to her heavenly home March 22, 2022. She was 89 years old. Evelyn was born Friday, Nov. 4, 1932, in Marlin, TX to Alex and Katie Marshall Zaborowski. She lived on a farm in a 3-room house surrounded by the cotton fields in Bremond, Texas with her parents, sisters and brothers. Though she was a young girl it was inevitable that she was not cut out for the farm life. So, with her bags packed and her parents’ blessings she was welcomed with open arms to live with a family friend, Ike and Vickie Gorski in Marlin Texas. So, with her eight-grade education she began her career in the Retail Sales landing her first job at the local Drugstore / 5 and Dime in Marlin. At the age of 20 she met and married the love of her life, Pete Jr. On Saturday, July 19, 1952, they were married at St Mary’s Catholic Church in Bremond Texas. Immediately after the wedding celebrations they packed up and headed to Ft. Benning Army Base in Columbus, GA where her husband reported to duty in the United States Army. After Pete’s discharge from the army they decided to make their home in Houston. Evelyn took a job in customer service at the Shoppers Fair on North Shepherd St. then landed a great sales associate job up the road with Sears and Roebuck where she retired. In the early 70’s the couple moved their family to their new home on in the Spring Branch area. They raised 5 children: Cindy, Ronnie, Tom, Janet, and Martha Ann. They have remained lifelong members of St Jerome Catholic Church. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Brother Knight, Pete Bruno Dutka, Jr., parents, Alex and Katie Zaborowski, grandson, Bryce Herrera, sisters, Augustine Budzise and Virgie Bielamowicz, brothers, Louis and Bill and, infant brother, Adam. She is survived by her loving Family: sister, Pauline Peitrowski; brother-in-law, Gene Bielamowicz; sister-in-law, Gertrude Witzkoske; children, Cindy and Gene Majkszak, Ronnie and Hazel Dutka, Tommy and Angie Dutka, Janet and George Bartkowiak, and Martha Ann Herrera, 17 Grandchildren, 19 Great Grandchildren, many nieces, nephews.
Mary Violet Valerio Gorka of Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 3, 2022. Born on August 23, 1929, in Houston, TX to her parents, Dora Zuniga Valerio and Maurice Valerio who proceeded her in death. She married Brother Knight, Edmond Gorka, Sr. (deceased) on Sept. 29, 1947. Mary was a homemaker, devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a member of Assumption Catholic Church, on a bowling league and a member of Ladies Auxiliary of Knights of Columbus #2917.
Isabel Bernal Jalomo, age 85 passed away in her home on Jan. 31, 2022 surrounded by her family. Isabel was born to Otilio Bernal and Luz Galvan Bernal, July 1, 1936 in Houston, TX. She married Ismael Salas Jalomo on Nov. 18, 1956 and together they raised 5 daughters. Isabel is survived by her husband of 65 years, Brother Knight Ismael*, daughters: Elizabeth, Erlene, Rita, Annette Jalomo-Garcia (Robert), Lisa; grandson, John Erik. Isabel worked at Sakowitz in the makeup department and as a seamstress for Battlesteins for 15 years. She was an outstanding cook and baker and loved entertaining family and friends. Isabel was also a breast cancer survivor for 20 years. She is preceded in death by her parents Otilio and Luz Bernal and her 8 siblings: Frances Gomez (Rudy), Otilio (Lupe), Joe (Virginia), Jesse, John (Ethel), Ramona Garza (Rodolpho), Victor (Amada) and Arthur.
Brother Knight Harold James Fenn, born Dec. 28, 1948 in Houston, TX to Boyd and Lydia Fenn, died Jan. 7, 2022 in Trinity, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents, Boyd and Lydia Fenn and his grandson, Travis Fenn. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Fenn; his children: Todd Fenn and wife, Heidi: Brad Fenn and wife, April; Craig Hatton and wife, Michelle; Tracy Green; Brandon Hatton and wife, Lisa; grandchildren: Todd Fenn, Jr.; Thomas Fenn; Destiny Astorga and husband, Erik; James Green; Loron Green; Trinity Hatton; Shelby Hatton; Shay Canada; Blake Canada; Tyler Canada; Alexandra Diaz, and Braden Diaz; great-grandchild, Violet Astorga; his sisters, Pat Koteras and husband, Gilbert, and Mary Farmer and husband, John; and his brother, Mike Fenn and wife, Barbara. Harold proudly served his country in the Army National Guard from 1968 –1974. Harold was also an active Third Degree member of Knights of Columbus, Council 2917. After graduating from Jeff Davis High School, Har-old moved to Schulenburg, TX where he resided until the early 1980s and eventually moved back to Houston. He was an avid bowler and participated in countless cookoffs and charity events. Harold spent most of his working career in oil and gas, having worked at Houston Digital Instruments for over 30 years, retiring in 2019.
Brother Knight, Robert John Braun, went to his heavenly home on Dec. 1, 2021. A native Houstonian, Robert was born Sept. 30,1934 to Leo J. Braun, Sr. and Carrie McCarron Braun. He was a US Air Force veteran and his service ended prior to the Korean War. Robert married Lucille Kainer in 1967 and to this union of 54 years was born Rachel Braun Miller (Chris) and Michael Braun. He is survived by his wife, Lucille, his children, his grandchildren, Eric Miller, Matthew Miller, and Rebecca Miller, his brother, John Braun, and his sisters, Catherine Lamonte and Barbara Hartdegan. He was greeted in heaven by his parents and his older brother, Leo J. Braun, Jr. Robert worked in shipping and receiving and retired from Schlumberger Well Services. He volunteered as a post-care minister at Memorial Hospital, Greater Heights and as a minister to the Homebound at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church, Memorial Park. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #2917 and of the Schlumberger Retirees Club.
Carrie Majewski Gurka Walkoviak died peacefully of natural causes on Nov. 23, 2021. Born Kazimiera Petronella Majewski, she was the second of six children born to Tony and Veronica (Mozdzinski) Majewski almost 98 years ago in the Sauney Stand Community (Southeast of Chappell Hill, TX). Carrie married Anzelmas Floyd Gurka on July 18, 1943 at St. Stanislaus in Chappell Hill. They were married for 26 years and blessed with Carrie met Brother Knight Joe Louis Walkoviak and were married at St. Rose of Lima Houston on June 17, 1978. Carrie learned to appreciate and embrace the cultures of the Polish American life-style of fun, food, music and dancing at an early age. She found a particular interest in polka and waltz music. She taught all three of her children the art of dancing. She was a member of Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus #2917 ladies auxiliary and SPJST Pokrok Lodge #88. Carrie was prede-ceased by her parents, first husband, sisters; Emilie Wisnieske, Nancy Kubeczka, Pauline Stepanski, brothers; Eddie and Tom Majewski, niece; Barbara Stepanski. She is survived by her husband, Joe Walkoviak; children: Betty Mikolajchak (Clarence), Larry Gurka (Elizabeth), Marvin Gurka (Dorothy); 4 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Patrick James Bilski, 49, of Cypress, TX passed away on October 24, 2021. Pat was born on April 6, 1972, in Houston, TX to Billie J. Bilski, Jr. and Betty (Matura) Bilski. Pat was a loud, funny, outgoing, proud Texas Polack. He loved his music and could sing all the words to numerous songs from any genre, although Polish music was his favorite. Pat met his wife, Robyn at the Chappell Hill bazaar in 1992, they were married on June 6, 1998. They lived in Cypress, TX with their two beautiful daughters, Sarah (19) and Loryn (16) and their chocolate lab Molly B (6). As their girls are getting older, they were starting to plan for their empty nester weekends and future retirement at the family land in Brenham. Librada Guadalupe Rodriguez Peña, 89 was born Aug.17, 1932 in Robstown, Texas and raised in Refugio, TX. Proceeded in death by her husband of 48 yrs. Brother Knight Eugene B. Peña, parents, Concepcion & Gabriel Rodriguez Sr., siblings, Cristina Trinidad Rodriguez, Gabriel Rodriguez Jr., and Manuela “Nellie” R. Luna, granddaughter Dena Everett and grandson James Quentin. Known by many as “Lupe”, she went to be with the Lord on Oct. 16, 2021 in Houston, Texas. She married the love of her life Eugene B. Peña on May 15, 1954 in Portsmouth, OH. They later moved to Chicago, IL where they began their family of 4 children. The family returned to their Texas home after 13 yrs. A long-time member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Lupe lived a beautiful and loving life. Her greatest joys in life were her family. She was gracious and generous to all. She is survived by her children, Charmaine “Terri” Peña, Eugene B. Peña and wife Angela, Carmen Rose and husband Jesse G. Reyes Jr., Cleo Lynn and husband Larry Hammond and siblings Reynalda Beltran, Genevieve “Jean” Mercado, Oscar Rodriguez, and Bessie Ahrendt. Irene Marie Zapalac Hundl of Houston went home to be with our Lord on Oct. 2, 2021, at the age of 94. She was born in Frydek, TX on July 16, 1927, the daughter of Edward and Vera Zapalac. She married the love of her life, Brother Knight Joseph (Joe) A. Hundl, Sr. They were married for 61 years and were blessed with 6 children. Irene and Joe lived their faith daily. They were active members of Holy Name Catholic Church for many years. Faith and family were of the utmost importance. Irene and Joe were very active members of our council for many years. Irene is preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Vera Zapalac; husband, Joseph Hundl, Sr.; sons, Duane Hundl, Sr. and Wesley Hundl, Sr.; grandson, Wesley Hundl, Jr.; sister, Edith Sliva (Eugene). Irene is survived by her son, Joseph Hundl, Jr. (Virginia); daughters, Candice Tyrrell (Ed), Renette Jasmer (Scott), and Dorian Bray (Tom); daughter-in-laws, Sherry Hundl, Sharon Cash (Doug), numerous grandchildren and great-grandchilden.
Deana Schultz Clark, daughter-in-law of Brother Knight Alvin and Bobbie Clark was called home to Our Lord on Sept. 28, 2021 after a massive heart attack. Deana was 55 years old. She is survived by her spouse, Jeffrey Clark; sons, Neeson and Nico Tanguma; step-sons, Austin and Noah Clark; step-daughter, Cheryl Clark; mother-in-law, Barbara Robinson and Brother, David Schultz. She is preceded in death by her parents and the father of her sons.
Brother Knight Raymond Gerard Borski, of Spring, TX born April 13, 1953, passed away peacefully at the age 68, on Sept. 3, 2021, after a courageous 10-month battle with neuroendo-crine cancer. He is survived by his spouse of 46 years, Sara (Hoffart) Borski, daughters Rachel and Laura Borski. He is also survived by his six siblings, Michael Borski, Francis and husband Larry Strelau, Diane and husband William Harrell, Bernard and wife Debbie Borski, Geraldine and husband Fred McClosky, Mark and wife Terry Borski and a copious amount of nieces, nephews, and grandnephews/nieces. He is preceded in death by his parents, Rufus and Clara Borski, his parent-in-laws, John and Mary Louise Hoffart and a countless number of other loving relatives and friends. Raymond was a 49 year Knight of Columbus 3rd degree member of council no. 2917 in Houston, He graduated from St. Pius X high school in 1971. He was a machinist by trade at the American Can Company, Alfa-Laval, and CSI. After buying out CSI, he eventually moved the shop from La Porte, TX to Houston, TX and changed the company to Centrifuge Services Industries, LLC. He loved nothing more than playing the drums. The “Original” Country Sundowners was the infamous band Raymond and his brothers, Mark and Bernard, brother-in-law William Harrell and cousin Kevin Borski started and they played for 25 years.
Margaret Kopczynski, age 93, of Houston Texas, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday August 24, 2021. She was born on July 28, 1928, in Grimes county, Texas, to Frank M. Busa and Katie Macjewski Busa and spent her childhood on a farm in the Grimes County area. She is preceeded in death by her parents, Frank and Katie; her sisters Martha Busa Holliman and Agatha Busa McClosky; her beloved husband Brother Knight Cashmere “Kie” Kopczynski; and her two daughters Frances Kopczynski Saunders and Helen Kopczynski Lockner. Margaret was the oldest of four children and is survived by her sister Lucy Kopczynski Holiday of Houston, Texas, and her numerous nieces and nephews and several cousins. She was a longtime faithful member of Assumption Catholic Church. She was a member of the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary, Catholic Daughters, Assumption Church Harvest Years Group, Polish National Alliance, and several garden clubs, including the Houston Daylily Society.

Victoria Bernice Slenk Kubiak of Houston, TX passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 28, 2021, at the age of 99. Victoria was born on October 7, 1921 in Bremond, TX to Antone and Annie Slenk. She is survived by her daughter, Wanda Noskrent; daughter-in-law, Sally Kubiak; granddaughters, Denise Noskrent Sparks and husband Sean Sparks, Kristy Noskrent and Kerri Noskrent; grandson, Zachary Kubiak and numerous great grand-children. Victoria was preceded in death by her parents, Antone and Annie Slenk, husband, Brother Knight Raymond Frank Kubiak, her son, Brother Vincent Kubiak, and her brothers and sisters.
Brother Knight James Nels (Jim) Hansen, beloved husband and father, died peacefully on May 26, 2021. Jim was born at home on December 27, 1933, to Clarence Henry and Catherine O’Mara in Bemus Point, New York. Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Lora Radack Hansen and children Cynthia (Cindy) Messina and husband Joe, Steven Hansen (Annetta), and Robert (Bob) Hansen. Grandchildren are Joseph Messina Jr (Micheli), James Messina, Steven Hansen Jr (Lori), Michael Hansen (Brittany), Robert Hansen II (Mandy) and Brittany Humbird (Travis) and 14 great grandchildren. His graduation from Bemus Point High School in 1951 led to 2 years at St. Bonaventure University, then to the U.S. Air Force. Jim and Lora married May 7, 1955 after his basic training. His service ended with them at Randolph AFB in San Antonio, Texas. Going back to New York, he became an industrial bearing company representative and was sent to Houston in 1960. He travelled parts of Texas and Louisiana until he retired in 1998. Jim was a life member of the Knights of Columbus Council 2917. He was an active bowler on the Knights of Columbus Council 2917 bowling league for many years. Jim was predeceased by his parents and two sisters: Maureen Dewyne and Beverly O’Neil.
Gertrude Mary Lewandowski was born in Chappell Hill, Texas on Nov. 14, 1932 to Joe and Mary Zientek. She passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 22, 2021 at the age of 88. On Nov. 15, 1952 Gertrude married the love of her life, Florian (Lack) Lewandowski. Gertrude and Florian built their life in Houston where they had 5 children and became the proud owners of The White Rose Drive Inn. She is survived by her brother Dominick Zientek (Lillian), sister Lucy Buntin (David), and her children, daughter Barbara & Donnie Wilson, son Brother Knight Tony Lewandowski & Robbie Richardson, daughter JoAnn & Brother Knight Billy Kerley, daughter Lillian & Tommy Wilson, and son Brother Knight Marion & Lynette Lewandowski; 7grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Gertrude is preceded in death by her parents Joe and Mary Zientek, husband Florian Lewandowski, brother Julian Zientek, sister Evarista Svec (Ivan), and great grandson Tyler Matthew Newton.
Lucille Bennett Clawson, born Feb.10, 1932 in Hallettsville, Texas to Mace and Amelia Bennett, died on Thursday, May 13, 2021, in Manvel, Texas. Lucille was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny; her parents, her sisters, Maggie and her husband, Bob, Peggie and her husband, Marvin; her brothers, Charles and his wife, Gloria, and Timmie. Lucille is survived by her daughters, Darlene and her husband, Bobby, and Kelly; her grandson, Adam and his wife, Kathy; and great-granddaughter, Addison; her sister, Pat and her husband, Dennis; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Lucille was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Court Christ the King, for 60 years. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus, Council 2917.
Brother Knight David Harold Wilgus, born January 27, 1945 in Houston, TX to Richard Sr. and Madeline Willgus, passed away on Monday, April 19, 2021, in Houston, Texas. David was preceded in death by Richard G. Willgus Sr. (Father), Madeline A. Willgus (Mother), Richard G. Willgus Jr. (Brother) and Greg A. Parker (Brother-in-Law). He is survived by Mary A. Parker (Sister), Mary A. Willgus (Sister-In-Law), Tina Gorski (Niece) and Husband Geoffrey, Richard G. Willgus III (Nephew) and Wife Tay, Jason A. Parker (Nephew) and Wife Ashley, many great nieces and great nephews and cousins. David served in the U.S. Navy, was a member of many BBQ and Bowling Teams of which he holds many awards. He has been a part of many charitable organizations, including the HOLD’EM & HIT’EM CLUB, Knights of Columbus Council 2917, Toys for Tots, Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for 35 years. David was a member of the HOLD'EM & HIT'EM CLUB, a 501(C)(3) CHARITY. Brother Knight Chris J Mocek of Bremond, TX. went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 13, 2021 at Baylor Scott & White in College Station at the age of 87 years. He was born to Frank and Angeline (Tomczeszyn) Mocek on August 2, 1933 in Bremond. Chris attended Texas A&M where he received a degree in Agriculture Economics Class of 1956. Upon graduation he served in the Army Reserve. He began his career by starting in the laboratory at Retzloft Chemical. He worked his way through the company, which later became known as Witco Chemical. He was the Vice President of North & South America of the oilfield and agriculture divisions. Chris retired from Witco Chemical in 1995. He continued his career in the oilfield as a consultant for many years following his retirement. Chris married the love of his life, Cecilia O’lexy on July 5, 1958. They have lived in Bremond for the past 23 years previously living in Houston. Chris was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Bremond and Knights of Columbus council 2917 in Houston. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers; Stanley Mocek and Ed Mocek, and sister; Helen Ditta. He is survived by his loving wife, Cecilia; sons: Brother Knight Dwayne Mocek of Houston; Glenn Mocek and wife Sherry of Spring; sister, Frances Pajak of Chicago, IL; brother, Leonard Mocek of Houston
Brother Knight Guadalupe Gonzales went to be with the Lord on January 7, 2021. He joined Council 2917 in 1952. He was a member of the council for 69 years.
Diane Nanette Lima, born August 7, 1942 won her battle over pancreatic cancer when she met Jesus, March 7, 2021, at home, in Houston, Texas. She graduated from Lamar High School in 1960 and attended Sam Houston State University where she met the love of her life, Vincent. Her passion was round and square dancing which they did for over 25 years. She loved her family and friends fiercely and never met a stranger. She was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. Preceded in death by her husband, Brother Knight Vincent of 59 years, her sister, Schalamahar Brunson, parents J Howard and Betty Ruth Brunson and grand-son, Hunter Gregg. Diane will be missed by her Twins, Tamlyn Gregg and Tyron Lima and grandchildren Victoria Gregg, Tyler Lima, Taryn Lima.
Catherine Juanita (Giacona) Cupps, 83, of Spring, TX entered into rest on February 5, 2021. She was born in Mesquite, TX on June 29, 1937 to parents Nancy Jewel Ivy and Louis Perry Batchelor. Juanita was married to Brother Knight Frank Giacona from 1954 until his passing in July, 1998. Juanita married Darwin Cupps on July 15, 2000. During Juanita's life she worked as a hair dresser, and through that made many life-long friends. She loved to dance, garden, go fishing, and spend time with her family at their gatherings. Juanita is survived by her husband, Darwin Cupps; children Chatta & Bill Goldsby, Brother Knight Frank & Cindy Giacona; step-children Jack & Carol Giacona, Mary Willgus, Camella & Charles McKinney, Benny & Susan Giacona, Vickie Lynn & Tony Bradac, Patricia Gayle Cupps; grandchildren Katie Goldsby, James Giacona.
Brother Sir Knight Joseph Joe Campise, born on Jan. 11, 1937, was called to eternal rest on Jan. 18, 2021. Joe was a 49 year member of Council 2917 and a Fourth Degree Sir Knight of the Monsignor George A. Wilhelm Assembly 1094.
